Big Bend Again

The Chisos is always a transdental experience. Even when there is so much haze from the southeast brushing in across the Rio Grande valley that you can barely see.

This backpacking excursion put me a little closer to the south rim than my last trip. The mornings were quiet and the range was void of any human presence. Just me and my buddies on the phantom range.

If you haven’t been to Big Bend Nat’l Park – please do. Your depriving yourself.

Among the Pines

Tuesday, 19. January 2010 15:52

I had the great privilege of staying at Bear Bend overnight recently. This cabin was Sam Houston’s bear hunting cabin for some time. Sam Houston University is beginning to move the General’s cabin and several other historical cabins from their secluded piney environment to the campus this week.

Many and much thanks to Denton Florian for having me out to photograph these last images of the cabins in their natural locations. Denton is completing a documentary of the life of Sam Houston. Visit the Sam Houston Project for more information.

Visualizing

Wednesday, 4. November 2009 11:12

The defining moment my photography was in the hot, humid East Texas countryside. I was shooting stills on a reenactment for the Sam Houston Documentary. This moment was defining because of visualization.

A shot came into my mind, actually a collection idea. I was inspired by this face above. I saw an entire collection of intimate face portraits, some  framed edgy – some plain, like the one above. But the concept was intriguing. Usually we western societies avoid invading personal space, staring at length directly at someone, etc. But there is an intimacy to these actions, a way of transcending silence and conversation to find character. This intimacy is the framing of the collection. A collection of intriguing, interesting characters.

I visualized this shot, the first time that I had actually visualized and photographed. I thought about it, perceived it, acted. These shots have flaws. I regret that they doesn’t have more environmental context; black powder rifles firing behind his shoulder, movement or the like. However, I believe the image conveys the intimacy.
As a growing photographer, I am constantly trying to visualize images. I find this art to be advancing my eye and engaging my awareness.

Texan Natives Project

Sunday, 1. November 2009 16:35

Posting some images from my last outing with Blackwolf and friends at a fair gig. They were part of a reenactment for one of the evening shows. I had a hard time getting myself into the fair unannounced so I was limited in how close I could get. Reminds me the need of a good telephoto lens.

These images are adding to the project I’m doing on Texan Natives.
