IN AND OUT
OF KENYAN SLUMS
Many daylight-consuming bus rides through western Kenya allowed us to visit and document dozens of Christian Relief Fund (CRF) orphanages, schools, programs, and surrounding communities. Urban Kisumu, high altitude Eldoret, rural Bungoma, and mountainous Mt. Elgon all complimented each other with their unique beauty and their unique poverty.
Scope: Strategic Consulting, Photography, Videography
Organization: Christian Relief Fund

CRF operates in several hemispheres of the globe. Their focus in western Kenya is child support systems in impoverished areas where the tribal war and AIDS orphaned the majority of children under their care.
STRATEGY
CRF desired to bolster their visual library for day-to-day communications and fundraising activities - encompassing the diversity of programs while demonstrating the consistency of their care.
Though the landscapes, contexts, and tribes changed, one thing remained comparatively similar for every program we visited – everyday life. We centered the photographic work around these ordinary scenes to create a visual consistency to CRF's work in Kenya, including the broader orphan care communities - teachers, nurses, kitchen staff, social workers, and farmers.
The project was a game-changer. Jake helped us see our narrative in new ways. He helped communicate our vision with greater intention and clarity while growing our impact by identifying opportunities for improving our program offerings.
The quality of the photos and focus on individuals was an essential step to create an internal organizational shift to focus on the child more than the 'program' the child was in.
